I suffered from acne for many years. I remember getting pimples on my nose and forehead during puberty. At the time, I thought this was a typical hormonal change that came with being a teenager. I somehow knew that it would be temporary.
However, the problem that started during puberty stayed with me until I was 36. During this time, I even developed acne on my cheeks and neck. I tried every product I could find. I tested all kinds of anti-acne products available in drugstores and supermarkets on my skin. But nothing really worked.
On top of that, I was always covering my skin with cosmetics because I felt it was not clear enough to be seen naturally.
It was not until I was in my late thirties that I decided to see a dermatologist. She prescribed a three-month course of antibiotics, which had the side effect of drying out my mucous membranes in order to treat acne.
I followed the treatment for three months, but afterwards, I still had pimples and scars. The dermatologist then told me to continue taking the antibiotics until I saw some improvement in my skin.
Deep down, I did not want to continue suffering from dry mucous membranes as a side effect. I was also concerned about the long-term effects of these antibiotics on my body, which made me uncomfortable. So, I decided to stop the treatment and accept my skin as it is.
The realisation
After a few months, I made some lifestyle changes, which included fasting as well. And what happened? During this time, my skin became the most beautiful it had ever been! It was glowing and clean, and I loved it! I loved what I saw in the mirror!
Then I had a big realisation: My skin is a direct reflection of what I eat. It’s as simple as that. At the time, I understood the principle, but I did not know which foods would make my skin glow or which ones were actually good for me. After all, I had always thought I was eating healthily.
Yes, I was eating healthy in a sense that I wasn’t eating any junk food or processed food, But after I stopped fasting, the pimples came back. My challenge now was to find out what I should eat to avoid triggering acne.
It took me a few months to realise that what we eat affects some of our main organs — the liver, gut and kidneys — and that when these organs are functioning properly, this can also be reflected in our skin.
I then realised that we should eat and drink things that support these organs, rather than things that work against them.
Reminder: One habit that helped improve my skin was drinking 700 ml of hot water with one tablespoon each of chia seeds and crushed flaxseeds throughout the day. I noticed a difference after just a couple of days. Why might they help? Chia seeds and crushed flaxseeds can support liver and gut health.
After improving the health of these organs and seeing improvements in my skin, I slowly realised that I didn’t need harsh products to treat acne externally. Instead, I needed gentle, soft, high-quality cosmetics that were free from toxic ingredients as they interfere with my hormones.
I started making my own masks, serums and creams at home. I either had to prepare the product each time I applied it or keep it in the fridge, where it would last a maximum of a week.
My favourite at that time was my turmeric mask. It contained a mixture of natural turmeric powder, ghee and honey. However, I could only apply the mask on Saturdays, as turmeric stains very easily, so sometimes, even after washing my face several times, it would still be slightly yellow.
I loved making these natural formulas at home, but the busier you are, the less time you have to prepare your own cosmetics. I knew that this wouldn’t be sustainable in the long run because it just takes time.
After experiencing these issues, and wanting to use natural products with safe and effective ingredients, we decided to launch our flagship product: the turmeric mask.
As we all know, turmeric is a versatile root that can support our health in several ways. It is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties, which may help calm skin inflammation and redness associated with acne. It's antimicrobial properties may also help reduce the bacteria that cause acne. It is also an antioxidant, helping to protect skin cells from damage caused by free radicals.
The mask also contains other powerful natural ingredients that support the skin, such as kaolin, vitamin C and aloe vera.
After applying the mask, you will notice that your skin is softer and brighter because it has been deeply cleansed!
If you have acne-prone skin, the turmeric mask can be a great addition to your skincare routine. It helps remove excess sebum and deeply cleanse the pores. You will also notice that it helps reducing the appearance of acne scars.
The Turmeric Mask is our flagship product, and the origin of Kurbela. So far, we have received many positive reviews on Trustpilot from customers who like our products.
